I honestly don't know where to start - it's a completely new feeling for me. Ugh.Bullet points...
- After reading the reviews of the previous book in the series, Dragonmark, I waited until it was much cheaper before I bought it. I was really glad I did! The reviewers weren't wrong; however, none of the ones I read noted than Dragonmark wasn't mentioned/explained until the end of the story, and it wasn't done well At All, so I ended that book making really weird looking WTF faces.
-Despite that, I got this one because I really wanted to know Falcyn's story. I didn't make it halfway through before the WTF face showed up. I'm pretty sure it's still there.
- I had to keep SK's character pages (on her website) open so I could look up characters and refresh my memory.
- Characters who have been evil, maniacal beings throughout the entire series are portrayed to be loving. (WTF??)
- Medea mentions entirely too many times that she's one of the bad guys like that makes her cool. Seriously. Unnecessary and weird.
- I didn't read the Lord's of Avalon, so I spent more than a little time confused.
- Aside from LoA characters, some of the regulars (and not so regulars) showed up toward the end for no real reason. Gratuitous appearance, maybe?
- Simi's speech pattern is usually pretty cute. This time it was ridiculous. It was too much, and stopped sounding like Simi.
- When the book ended, I had no idea it was about to happen. NONE. I turned the page (kindle) and there wasn't anything left. I went back because I thought I missed something, but no, I didn't. It was like stopping in the middle of a sentence. Who does that??
Not writers who want to make their fans happy and keep selling books.

Spoilers ahead, so be mindful of that if you read this review!
I really liked this book! I am in a reading challenge with a friend to catch up with all of Kenyon's books and this was of course necessary before Stygian. I'm glad we got to it, as I do have a love for dragons. Out of all of them, I really liked Falcyn. I like his love for Blaise and why. I really loved that the majority of the book was NOT centered in Sanctuary or even in our world, which was nice. The focus was kept on Falcyn and Medea primarily with Urian and Blaise also playing key roles. It was also nice to see Kenyon's early characters in her Lords of Avalon series (I still maintain she had no intention to cross that series under her other moniker) in this book, like Varian. I liked the chemistry between Falcyn and Medea. One of my favorite things about this book was that she simply had to sing to him, rock him, and play with his hair and he was lost to her. It was really cute and it brought warm fuzzy feelings out.
I had two mental record-screeching moments in reading this book, one good and one that made me go huh?! The first was reading that Falcyn is Noir's son. I liked Falcyn explaining some of Apollymi/Braith's backstory and reason for why she's trapped (using her own magic and portals and that's how they trapped her). However, in a previous book of Kenyon's, she wrote that Noir and Azura were still searching for their sister, Braith, and couldn't find her. I think it was Dreamwarrior/Jericho's book. If they were the ones who trapped her, wouldn't they know where she is? They should know Apollymi is Braith and how to get her out. I did find it humorous that Falcyn mention Azura as Noir's sister-wife, since we all had read previously that Noir and Azura referred to themselves AS siblings. I wondered about the writing on that...
What made me go "huh?!" was Apollo and Morgen's conversation about a new character Kissare, Apollymi's true love and first husband, and her FIRST son, Monakribos. Wait, what? This is new... First, how did/does Apollo know this and why was this NEVER mentioned in any prior book. I realize as a reader Kenyon may have not thought of this plot detail yet when writing her prior books, but this makes an interesting detail. I had to ask my sister if in the Chronicles of Nick books or her new Deadman's Cross books (which center around Thorn) if Kissare and/or Monakribos are mentioned she is just as confused. I have a gut feeling that both characters will play important parts in upcoming books and probably have been reborn. I have a feeling we probably already know who both are.
EDIT I have learned that this spoiler may be addressed in the later Chronicles of Nick books, so I look forward to reading those to find out!
Anyway, I did enjoy the book and I do recommend it!
If you haven't read several of her other books this one will be extremely confusing. Even having read the books in this series leading directly into this one I was confused by a dozen characters whose backstory was fleshed out in a novel I didn't read, or at least that's what I'm assuming/hoping.
Kenyon is a great writer, her book Acheron is one of my most read in my collection, but I feel like this one was rushed for a quick money grab. Her stories also tend to be pretty similar depressed powerful male with a bunch of trust issues meets either a nice defenseless girl who teaches him he's worthy of love or a bad ass angry/ depressed woman who also needs to be taught to love again.
Kenyon also seems to have an issue keeping her own characters straight as in one book a character will be written as the most powerful being in the universe and another will be getting pushed around by a baby demon.
All in all if you like fantasy then read Kenyon, but not this book. This one seems to only be for super fans and to make money.
I've been a Dark Hunter fan a long time. There have been a few books along the way that I didn't like, but this is the first time I feel ripped off. The story itself is great, but this is literally half a book. I feel like I paid for a full length novel and I got the first half of a story. I finished reading it in a few hours. It ended mid- story.... I feel ripped off.
