It's the summer of 1987, and Daron Marks is trying to make it big. His band is starting to attract attention from major labels, which is good, but his own attention too often strays to the band's lead singer, Ziggy. Daron already struggles with being gay, he doesn't need a relationship with a band member to make things worse. He resolves to keep his crush a secret. But nothing stays a secret for very long in the white-hot spotlight of fame.

Volume 2 of Daron's Guitar Chronicles encompasses over 80 chapters of the popular online serial (over 300 book pages), the most tumultuous year of Daron's life yet.

There has to be a but. Once you've reached perfection, there really isn't much to live for.

Anyway, I read the first book and then this book, then moved to web format to read the rest. I think the material works best in web format. It just moves a little slow for the novel format, at least to me. Maybe it is because I am an adult reader and wanted a little less talk and more action, or maybe it was just the concept that I spent most of the book having trouble suspending my disbelief that no guy groupies were hanging on, even in the 80s (but what do I know?), but reading page after page of a young guy not getting any action got old after a while. It keeps the web readers coming back, but the novel reader is already going to be turning the page, ya know?

So I always finish up with the positive, and that is the characters. They are really fall-in-love-with-able. You'll want to take Daron home with you and convince him to change. Well, unless you're a guy, in which case you'll just want to take him home with you. Ziggy- I will honestly admit that I missed half of what everyone saw as asshattery, I just thought he was kind of a space cadet (but I know a lot of people like that who mean well). It really is one of those books in which if either of the star crossed lovers ever, once, just sat down and said "listen, this is how I feel..." the book would be 2 pages long because they would have skipped off into the sunset whistling a happy tune. But, no, it is about two guys who can not, under any circumstances, ever, express an emotion, belief, feeling, or opinion in an open and honest way if it would be at all emotionally difficult. Just...can't...do...it. Makes you want to hit both of 'em over the head with a thousand dollar guitar.

Daron Guitar Chronicles Volume 2 Cecilia Tan Teddy Hamilton 0889290463289 Books Reviews

The continuation of Daron's story in which he struggles with who and what he is. While I love the description of the music and how Daron and his friends play off each other, the true power of the book lies in Daron's struggle to connect to his friends. So used to hiding who he truly is, he has lost the ability to communicate through words (thank god he has music), creating a distance that makes him feel alone and lonely. This inability to communicate creates all kinds of problems for him, including the inability to create and maintain the one relationship he craves.
Wonderful but slow story that makes you want to demand Volume 3 (and 4) RIGHT NOW!
Daron's Guitar Chronicles has become my addiction. I have been reading it faithfully for almost 3 years now but this is the first time I've written a review.
When I stumbled across the ebook for Volume One I had no idea what I was in for. I loved the writing right from the start but it wasn't until Ziggy showed up at the end of Volume One that I knew for sure I was going to stick with this series. And I am so glad that I did.
I am an avid reader and I have to say of all the series I’ve read this one is probably the one that has me the most emotionally invested. I’ve laughed, cried, yelled at the characters and everything in between. There are scenes that have totally devastated me emotionally but the high points are so worth it. The adrenaline rush of the high is always worth it.
If you read book one but aren't sure if you want to keep reading, trust me, it's worth it.
The story really comes into its own here. While it doesn't end on a true cliffhanger or a real resolution, the story gathers steam and never loses it. I love the writing and the way Daron's love life (or what passes for it) and coming to terms with his sexuality is interwoven with the band's sometimes painful development and Daron learning to speak up for what he believes personally and artistically.

FYI, those expecting erotica because of the identity of the author will be disappointed. The story is mostly closed-door. But since it's a bildungsroman (coming of age story), not erotica or erotic romance, that makes sense.
So, you're probably here reading this review because you want to know if Vol. 2 was any good, or if it was as good as Vol. 1. I'm struck by a couple of thoughts, having finished Vol. 2 last night.

First I want to hear the damn music! I want to hear Zig's voice, I want to hear Daron's playing, and Bart and Chris. I want to see them perform, Ziggy sliding (or throwing himself) across the stage. I want to watch the lyrics come alive as they're performed. Damn you, Ms. Tan! You've made me long for something that's not real! It's bad enough I want things that are real that I know I'll never get, but this? Argh!

(ahem)

Second There were many times when I wanted to grab Daron by the collar and shake him and scream "What the eff are you thinking? Don't do it, you idiot!". There are almost an equal number of times when I wanted to grab and shake and scream "Why the eff are you thinking about it -- just do it, you idiot!" Either are signs of a good story, IMHO, as it shows an emotional investment I've made into the characters.

Back to the original question, then was Vol. 2 any good? Yes, yes indeed. I enjoyed it a lot, overall more than Vol. 1. But there were several times when I feared the story would go off in a direction I didn't want it to, only to be brought back at the very last minute. And not in a plot sense, where I wanted the story to go this way instead of that way. More in an emotional sense, where I thought it was creeping into the angst arena too far, or it wasn't revealing enough about the emotional state of the characters as much as I wanted. I guess I was impatient or didn't have enough faith.

In the end, though, my patience and faith both paid off. The last 25% of it I read in a blur, as fast as I could turn the digital pages. I literally couldn't put it down as events unfolded and exploded into the final climax. I mean "exploded into the final climactic ending". Yeah. That's what I meant.

Was I satisfied with the ending? No, not particularly. It ended in one of those shirt-collar-grabbing moments I describe above, when I just wanted to shake him and scream at him (though what I wanted to scream I won't tell you). But that's life, I suppose, and in that sense it was a fine ending. It certainly left me wanting Vol. 3 in a bad way.

The only bad thing I can say is that the formatting was a bit off in places, and there were a few typos here and there. But that's it. In terms of story...it rates an A from me.
