The New York Times bestselling author of The Silver Linings Playbook offers a timely novel featuring his most fascinating character yet, a Vietnam vet embarking on a quixotic crusade to track down his nemesis from the war.

After sixty-eight-year-old David Granger crashes his BMW, medical tests reveal a brain tumor that he readily attributes to his wartime Agent Orange exposure. He wakes up from surgery repeating a name no one in his civilian life has ever heard—that of a Native American soldier whom he was once ordered to discipline. David decides to return something precious he long ago stole from the man he now calls Clayton Fire Bear. It may be the only way to find closure in a world increasingly at odds with the one he served to protect. It may also help him to finally recover from his wife’s untimely demise.

As David confronts his past to salvage his present, a poignant portrait emerges that of an opinionated and good-hearted American patriot fighting like hell to stay true to his red, white, and blue heart, even as the country he loves rapidly changes in ways he doesn’t always like or understand. Hanging in the balance are Granger’s distant art-dealing son, Hank; his adoring seven-year-old granddaughter, Ella; and his best friend, Sue, a Vietnamese American who respects David’s fearless sincerity.

Through the controversial, wrenching, and wildly honest David Granger, Matthew Quick offers a no-nonsense but ultimately hopeful view of America’s polarized psyche. By turns irascible and hilarious, insightful and inconvenient, David is a complex, wounded, honorable, and loving man. The Reason You’re Alive examines how the secrets and debts we carry from our past define us; it also challenges us to look beyond our own prejudices and search for the good in us all.

I was blown away by this novel! My father is a veteran from the Vietnam War and has always been hesitant to talk about it. I felt this novel gave me some insight on what a struggle it is to try and lead a civilian life after going through such a traumatic experience. At the same time the story talks about a character that seems, at face value, one way but is actually more complex and insightful than we the audience and his own son thinks. The protagonist is a man of action. Strangely, this makes him harder to pin down than someone who is mostly talk. We all have a lot to say in this current politcal climate but it is what we do, our actions, that make a true difference at the end of the day. That is what I took from it, at least. Love this author and love this book!

The Reason You're Alive A Novel edition by Matthew Quick Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Another one from Q that u just can't put down. Once again, his empathy for people shines thru and he gives a rare point of view. Just incredible. Read it in less than 24 hours!
I am one of those liberals and I hated his protagonist. Bitter, angry, worshiping guns and money and then.... well, no spoilers here. Just suffice it to say that this is a true bridge between American culture of the 70s and today. It is a testament to the shameful treatment of the veterans of a war we would like to forget and the courage of many of them who somehow survived the folly of the politicians....hope the current ones are listening (though I hear they don't read).
Way to go Mr. Quick...just hate waiting so long between your novels.
I read all of Matthew Quick's novels, and his latest is a great one as well. I was a bit reticent since I feel that we have all had our fill of Vietnam, but this story is modern day and has a surprisingly lovable protagonist who tells an amazing story.
Again, Matthew Quick has given us a fully human person on the page to help us see the world from another perspective. It is another touching, engaging story that is perfect for our time. His protagonist, David Granger, gives us a lot of reasons to love and hate him. But he speaks the truth, which can sometimes be difficult to hear. I can wholeheartedly recommend this novel for combat veteran and their loved ones. But this book will speak to anyone who lives and moves in the current polarized mess of the USA. Again, Matthew Quick shows us that he is at heart a master storyteller.
Quick writes about real love in the most relatable stories. I couldn't put this book down or stop thinking about the characters. While telling the story of redemption and familial love, Quick had me laughing and crying. In addition, he touches on current issues surrounding race and bigotry in America. I almost felt bad for the book that followed TRYA on my to be read list. TRYA is a hard one to follow.
This book shows the true meaning of tolerance, not just the politically correct version of tolerance. I wish every American citizen would read it in light of our recent racial tensions. It has a great message about love.
In a time where our country tends to categorize everything as black and white, Matthew Quick gives us a pleasant shade of gray to restore belief in humanity. This is a book about regret, redemption, and seeing the good in people. The characters are well developed and the book was hard to put down. It's just a great, entertaining read.
