William C. Martell's, "Secrets of Story: Well Told" is one of the best books on screenwriting. That being the case, Mr. Martell is one of the best screenwriting instructors one could ever ask for. He is extremely detailed oriented in regards to what techniques and tools make a screenplay story well told. If you've mastered structure, this book will certainly help you fill that structure by improving your story, your twists, and especially your characters

A number of years ago I read the printed versions of his BlueBook Series, as well as "The Secrets of Action Screenwriting," and I have been hooked ever since.

For those who may have read/studied Hague, Lazarus, Seger, McKee, Snyder, etc, you owe it to yourselves to add Martell to your reading list.

Secrets Of Story Well Told Screenwriting Blue Books Book 4 edition by William C Martell Reference eBooks Reviews

Martell always has an interesting angle to offer. He’s wonderful at breaking down stories into working pieces and then articulating how to put them back together. This book seemed a little more scattered than other entries in the series (although, thankfully, with far fewer typos), but still had plenty of wisdom to offer.
One of the two best screen writing books I've read (the other one was also a Blue Book by this same author.) This book will help you figure out how to really tell a story in your script, and as the title says, a story well told. Tells you the two ways to approach writing a story that will end up with a story people will want to read. I only wish I had started out with this book.

I've loved all the Blue Books, and I think I have all of them.
Don't let the price fool you - this how-to book holds so much value for would be screenwriters, especially for those just starting out and have literally no clue where to begin.

William gives great and up to date movie examples of all the screenwriting jewels he serves in his conversational style prose.

I highlighted the crap out of this book and will no doubt refer to it time and time again along my journey to creating big screen scripts.

My only drawback from this book was that some of the examples can be drawn out - of course there is good reason for it, but if you are a little impatient and just want to get into the meat of his work, then you may get slightly frustrated with this from time to time.

This is of course only a small issue for an otherwise 'aha-heavy', entertaining and ultimately very informative read.

I will definitely purchase your other books, and am looking forward to you completing your book regarding research - something I could use a hand with right now.
This is another fine book font the intermediate screenwriter to improve their skills. Each of Martell's Blue Books are great resources. I have learned a lot from each, and this volume is no exception.

I have two gripes about the series. Both are common with e-books that are self-published or released by small publishers. Each volume could benefit from (more) professional editing. The books are also repetitious, sometimes to the point of mild irritation.

In spite of these defects, the content more than compensates.
The information in this tome is invaluable. I would have given it 5 out of 5 stars, except for one problem... the same problem that plagues all of Mr. Martell's books that I've purchased (all available Blue Books and TSoAS included). The problem is, this book is RIDDLED with spelling and grammatical errors. Not just a few, but dozens and dozens of them, on almost every page. This is not an exaggeration. It's as though Bill didn't even run his work through a spell-checker, for crying out loud.

So, I had to take off a star. Make no mistake, though. The information in this Blue Book is incredible. i just wish Bill would get around to correcting the ridiculous number of spelling and grammar mistakes in all his books. Great info, not the best presentation. Worth the money, and more... I just wish every page didn't irritate my inner spelling/grammar nazi.
This Blue Book explains the foundational parts of the craft of storytelling. This is done in an entire book and not just an article or two.

Some of my favorite high-level tools are POV which is in scenes and the story generally. This book also explains the Non Protagonist POV, etc. SET UP AND PAY OFFS which establish different elements in the narrative and also form different types of PLANTS. And how THEME is related to different elements of the story.

Martell's books are interesting and fun reads. I would recommend this book to both screenwriters, playrights and novelists.
I love this book, great companion to the Save the Cat series. Also written by a working screen writer, Secrets of a Story Well Told does not waste pages telling you why others are wrong, Mr Martell gets right down to real tools you can put into use including unique exercises to stimulate your creativity.

The book is filled with examples from classic and current movies from all genres just like STC. The kindle version has a mountain of extras, is speech to text enabled ( great for drive time) and is priced right for writers.

Mr Martells encyclopedic knowledge of movies, enthusiasm for his craft and respect for the reader are infectious and leave you chomping at the bit to tackle old problems with new tools.
